Lucy Already Wants a New House!
Rikki worked so hard on building the nest but as soon as Lucy learns that the cedar one is abandoned, it appears that she wants to move! She stands on the roof of the cedar and Rikki remains on the roof of their existing nest house. But it appears as Rikki stands his ground. Trying to assure Lucy that the nest in the one they have is all they need for their family. When he realizes there is no reasoning with her, he decides to eat. But, alas, Lucy will not allow him to eat. So watch him go for the meal worms and she runs him off. Rikki decides that maybe he better take a look at their nest wondering if giving in to Lucy would get him to the food. So he goes in and takes another look around their nest and then comes back out onto the roof and tells her they are staying. And then as if he needs to prove it, he flys down to eat some worms no matter what! But watch as she puts him back in his place!! So funny. When you watch this, think of the accents of Rikki and Lucy Ricardo, that is how I think of it!! Too funny!!!

The Wave
I saw the wave!! I named the birds, Rikki and Lucy. And it was the other day that I saw Rikki wave his wing when Lucy was next to him on their roof. I thought he did it because there seemed to be another swallow coming into land. But in the books that Joyce gave me, it says they do the "wave" with their wing to attract the girls. It was really cool!! Especially since they are so close to the window. This picture is not mine.

They Arrive!
I strategically placed our new bluebird house out in the yard about 100 feet from the house a few weeks ago. We placed it facing southeast towards the kitchen window, and then all excited, we watched. Within minutes birds were checking out that house! I even witnessed a woodpecker on top! But no bluebird. After a few days of watching these 3 other birds invade the nest, I went out to chase them off but they dive bombed me! I went after the snow shovel. Can you imagine how ridiculous I looked swinging that through the air? I eventually learned that these very swift birds were barn swallows. Shiny iridescent blue backed swift flying swallows. Good thing they eat bugs cuz I was going to try to run them off.
After learning that sometimes the best solution for keeping the bluebirds safe from the aggressive swallows, was to add a second house. We had someone coming to mow and I wanted to move the houses closer so I just stuck them in the landscaping rocks outside the kitchen window. That was Thursday. We were busy moving Friday and Saturday, so Sunday I mentioned it to DB (boyfriend) to help me, that's when I heard him yell from the kitchen, "Deb, you got bluebirds!" We were so surprised and pleased! Wow, how cool was that!!!
